1. Why did you join the AIP? What benefits do you believe the AIP offers all their members?

Russell:
As I get older and see the current state of our Packaging industry I have decided to contribution and give back to the industry I have worked in for so many years and many colleagues have been members of the AIP and it was about time.
.
I welcome the membership and applaud the courses you are doing to educate young men and woman in this industry as I run into them at some of our suppliers.
.
With my years of experience in the industry I may be able to give back to an industry and collaborate and steps forward with their companies to make it easier and faster to create a Circular and Sustainable economy.
.
The company I work with Monde Nissin Australia strategy is ‘Simply Good For People and Planet’.

Rizal:
The reasons and benefits joining the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) were to network with Australia & New Zealand players and to understand the ANZ region direction towards sustainability and also as it is an educational organisation, I can get more transparent insights for knowledge (technical and non technical) of applications of packaging, packaging substrates, packaging & converting machineries.

Hartanto:
I joined the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) because I am new to the industry and I believe joining an educational organisation like AIP will definitely enhance my knowledge and personal development in pursuing career in the packaging industry.

The benefits I believe the AIP offers include but not limited to:

  • Community like no other: I personally received a very warm welcome from AIP family at the 2023 AIP Australasian Packaging Conference in Melbourne and look forward to attend more events in the future.
  • Knowledge: well crafted educational program and people, I am interested in exploring the trainings and certifications which AIP provides its members and I believe it is very valuable to be able to learn from top notch industry experts.
  • Valuable market insight: AIP members are the driving force of sustainable packaging initiatives and we will always get valuable market insight – A1 source of information.

2. How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Russell:
I have been in the industry for over 20 years. In print and plastic manufacturing being extrusion blow moulding, injection moulding within mould labelling and PET.

Rizal:
I am part of Indopoly Swakarsa Industry, Tbk, a flexible plastic for packaging manufacturer, base in Indonesia and I have been in this industry for about 10 years. I have learned a lot and become matured through meeting people from diverse backgrounds, various projects engagement, different technology of plastics knowledge which eventually moulded and brought me into various areas of expertise :

  • BOPP & BOPET film production through bi-axially orientation process as well as metallising film production through vacuum process.
  • Good knowledge in BOPP, BOPET, Metallising Film product, i.e : high barrier metallising films, white/cavitated films, wrapping film for high speed machine, etc.
  • Good knowledge in various application of BOPP and BOPET plastics, i.e: food packaging, Pet Packaging, Labels/moulding plastic, cigarette/box/pack wrapping, paper lamination, HPL for furniture.
  • Good knowledge in converting process such as printing (Rotogravure & Flexo press), lamination (dry & extrusion), filling process (VFFS & HFFS machinery), coating process (in-line and off-line)
  • Problem solving relates to various quality challenges of the products supplied to converters and end user.

Hartanto:
I recently switched careers and joined the industry in December 2021 through PT Indopoly Swakarsa Industry Tbk – a flexible packaging manufacturer in Indonesia. My areas of expertise include but not limited to:

  • Spearheading lead engagement plans by listening and understanding each partner’s goals and needs, resulted in bigger product mix sold YOY in 2022, 10% growth in sales quantity and 11% in revenue.
  • Collaborating with R&D department in introducing newly developed products which promote sustainability in flexible packaging, received positive feedback and 30% of partners signed up for trials in 2022.
  • Gathering market insight, creating strategies and tactics on particular market and/or segment based on data analysis, converted hot leads into 33% increase in partner population in 2022.

3. What is your current job role and what are your responsibilities?

Russell:
I am currently the Senior Packaging Technologist of Monde Nissin Australia. Our brands being: Black Swan Dips, Peckish Crackers, nudie Juice, Wattle Valley Dips & Cheese, Quorn ( frozen plant-based meals and food), Deli-Licious ( plant based refrigerated Deli counter products). My responsibilities are: Packaging Specifications from suppliers and setting up and maintaining a Packaging Library for 6 x Business Units and other Customers/retailers we supply, PREP assessment, ARL approval, Put ARL into artwork – marketing, Any other labels for recycling on pack, APCO reporting, ARL reporting, Stage & Gate input on Packaging, Rolling out ARL on ALL sku’s 2023 and 2024, Packaging Suppliers Approvals and ensuring updated accreditation is up to date ISO, HACCP , FSSC etc., Lunch & Learns with the business units on Packaging, Recyclability and APCO targets 2025, Publish articles on Circular Economy, Sustainability, and recycling on the internal companies SharePoint, Collaborative approach with our different plants on B2B recyclability, waste reduction.

Rizal:
My current job role and responsibilities are:

  • Handling non conformity product/materials being supplied to the customers.
  • To provide technical solution for development in flexible plastic (printing and lamination) for food packaging as well as cigarette industry through providing information of new tailored made product as an alternative way to gain cost saving.
  • Conduct product trial at domestic and overseas customers as well as assist them in problem solving during trial, scale up and commercial stage.
  • To provide product knowledge (latest product matrix) and technical sharing (defective product) in regular basis to the customers and sales/marketing team.
  • Recap all customer complaints, rejection rate, productivity all in a sustainable TQM program.
  • Feedback all customers complaint to internal and guiding the team to define the root/ possible cause.
  • Intensively travelling to domestic and overseas customers to maintain long term relationship and business.
  • Engage and become a part of the team to develop products that meet the global sustainable targets in various packaging applications.

Hartanto:

My current job role is in marketing. My responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Supporting partners in ANZ and West Europe region through sustainable supply planning and administration.
  • Collaborating with multiple departments within organisation to liaise with partners in various region to ensure partners’ success.
  • Promoting newly developed products which meet client’s requirements such as to meet APCO SPGs, CEFLEX guidelines and SDG.
  • Building stronger brand awareness and image to boost partners’ loyalty which leads to bigger market size and market share.
  • Conducting market research, collecting data, analysing information on market demand:
    - to identify potential new products to develop and promote.
    - to create strategies and tactics on particular market/segment.
