The Group comprises food and everyday needs retail businesses enabled by a large and convenient store network, online shopping and complementary services, and retail platforms that serve millions of customers weekly, partnering with over 13,000 suppliers, supported by over 202,000 team members. They strive to have a positive impact on their team, the planet, their customers and the communities they serve – and in doing so create long-term stakeholder value and sustainable growth for our business. Sustainable packaging is a key component of this and they’re working towards transitioning their own brand ranges by reducing virgin plastic, increasing recycling content and influencing packaging innovations. As of July 2025, they have removed more than 20,000 tonnes of virgin plastic packaging from circulation since 2018.

They work in many product areas including food & beverage, pet speciality, consumer electronics and automotive, and across a wide range of packaging materials. Their unique blend of structural design, brand & graphic design and material expertise enables us to design packaging that delivers positive brand, business and sustainability outcomes for their clients and their consumers. Birdstone’s client for this project is MARS Wrigley, whose iconic confectionery brands M&M’S®, SNICKERS®, MALTESERS®, EXTRA® and SKITTLES® are enjoyed in more than 180 countries. The marketing of these brands includes regular in-store Point of Sale (POS) displays at the end of aisles in retail supermarkets around Australia. The installation, maintenance, disassembly and disposal of POS display units is costly and inefficient. Mars identified an opportunity to make significant sustainability and commercial improvements to their in-store POS displays and engaged Birdstone to design a new generation of POS.

Reduce single-use, multi-material POS components.

Vertical columns provide top-load strength for full pack weights to be stacked.

Lacking tabs & slots allow cartons to lock together as a stable column.

Reduce multi-material, non-separable, single-use POS display components by 50%.

Reduce in-store labour for set-up, hand packing of display units & simplifying assembly of POS displays.

Represent a 28% reduction in the cost of a POS display.

Since they began in 2006, they have become a globally recognised brand, loved by businesses and consumers across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Hong Kong and Singapore.
.
Their difference is simple – their packaging solutions are better for the planet, better for people and better for business. BioPak use responsible and innovative materials made from plants, not fossil fuels, then they complete the circle at final disposal – they see composting as the best end-of-life option for their foodservice packaging. They also believe in using business as a force for good, they are B Corp Certified and donate 5% of their profits to positive change via their Give Back Fund.
