The AIP would like to congratulate our latest Fundamentals of Packaging Technology Graduate, Danielle Manetti MAIP, Sustainable Packaging Technologist at Jurlique International.

The internationally recognised on-line Fundamentals of Packaging Technology (FPT) bite-sized modules are available exclusively through the AIP in Australasia. The FPT Course is set up for the convenience of busy working professionals, and the training platform is functionally intuitive. Danielle kindly shared with the AIP what she learnt during her studies…

1. What is your current role? What are your areas of responsibility?

Danielle:
I currently work as a Sustainable Packaging Technologist at Jurlique International. I am fortunate that my role encompasses quite a diverse range of responsibilities, with some key areas focusing on driving sustainable packaging initiatives, supporting new product and packaging development from ideation through to design and implementation, and conducting qualification and durability trials using a variety of testing methods to assess risk and guide our packaging design directions.

2. What made you select the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course through the AIP?

Danielle:
It is well understood that the packaging industry is complex and dynamic, and one I entered somewhat serendipitously over 6 years ago. After a few years into my role, I had a desire to complement my practical experience with theoretical knowledge, and the Australasian Institute of Packaging seemed to be a great place to start. The Fundamentals of Packaging Technology On-line Course was then selected as it enabled great flexibility whilst providing comprehensive insight into a wide range of topics.

3. What did you learn along the way? Any favourite areas or topics?

Danielle:
As there were 42 modules, the learnings were multifold. Of particular interest to me were the modules focusing on polymer chemistry and the types of manufacturing processes to produce plastic packaging (e.g., injection moulding, blow moulding and thermoforming). One interesting learning was how the degree of crystallinity affects most plastic physical properties, where all else being equal, an increase in crystallinity also results in an increase in stiffness, heat tolerance and barrier properties, but at the cost of clarity.

4. What advice would you offer anyone looking to undertake the complete Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course?

Danielle:
If you have a desire to improve your comprehension of the packaging industry in totality, I would recommend this course. Furthermore, as similar topics can slightly overlap in material, I found it beneficial to do all 42 modules as it helped to reinforce more detailed concepts and enhance knowledge retention. The breadth of information can also feel overwhelming at times, so I would also suggest taking notes as you go!

5. Would you consider now completing the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation as your next step?

Danielle:
Yes, I will definitely be looking into completing my CPP designation in the near future.

The internationally recognised on-line Fundamentals of Packaging Technology (FPT) bite-sized modules are available exclusively through the AIP in Australasia. The FPT Course is set up for the convenience of busy working professionals, and the training platform is functionally intuitive. Callum kindly shared with the AIP what he learnt during his studies…

What is your current role? What are your areas of responsibility?

Callum:
I am currently a Packaging Reliability Technologist at Jurlique International. I work alongside our Brand Team to help develop new packaging for our upcoming new products. I also work alongside our Production team, getting feedback from packaging issues and developing initiatives and new packaging items to help improve efficiencies. I also help collate specifications for both internal and external use.

What made you select the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course through the AIP?

Callum:
I was new into the field of packaging technology and had learnt the fundamentals on the job. After discussing with a fellow colleague, we felt the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology would be a great way to get a deeper understanding of the intricacies of packaging development.

What did you learn along the way? Any favourite areas or topics?

Callum:
I thoroughly enjoyed the printing and glass manufacturing modules. We deal with a lot with various forms of decoration options throughout our promotional and NPD projects, so it was great to get a better understanding of how each process operates and is applied to our packaging.

What advice would you offer anyone looking to undertake the complete Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course?

Callum:
It is well recommended and saves as a great foundation into getting into the packaging industry. Take your time and digest each module.

Would you consider now completing the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation as your next step?

Callum:
It is on my radar for sure. Once I have built up some applied knowledge from the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course, the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) would be the next step.

Bernie kindly shared with the AIP what she learnt during her studies…

1. What is your current role? What are your areas of responsibility?

Bernie:
My current role is a Packaging and Processing Coordinator. This role is also a newly appointed role for the company and I have been in it for just over a year now. I work alongside almost all departments in the company with new product development. I also work with production to get feedback on current packaging and see if there is any way to improve it, and I organise new packaging line trials and transport trials. I also collect and supply packaging data like specs and dimensions for the company system and external platforms for customers.

2. What made you select the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course through the AIP?

Bernie:
I had never done packaging previous to this role and the company had never had a packaging technologist role before so together we decided that this course would be able to give me the introduction to world of packaging and basic knowledge of so many different type of packaging.

3. What did you learn along the way? Any favourite areas or topics?

Bernie:
With not having much knowledge of packaging previous to doing this course, it was great to see how much goes into the creating each element of packaging. The subjects I liked were blow and injection moulding and corrugated board. This is because we use a lot of this type of packaging in our company and it is great to know what it takes for the packaging to be produced from the raw material to the packaging we get.

4. What advice would you offer anyone looking to undertake the complete Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course?

Bernie:
It was well worth it and a great start for someone that only knew a little bit about packaging. I would highly recommend it.

In today’s challenging packaging environment, you can’t afford to make mistakes or overlook the critical details that cost precious time and money. You need the knowledge—from materials properties and selection to transport packaging issues—that can help you make better decisions regarding your company’s packaging dollars—now. The Fundamentals of Packaging Technology (FPT) on-line course is set up for the convenience of busy working professionals, and the training platform is functionally intuitive.

Now available exclusively via the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) in Australasia we are pleased to advise that the first two graduates Daniela Stinger AAIP, Innovation Technologist, Sealord Group Ltd and Julie Ann Cuya MAIP, Packaging Specialist, Oleo-Fats Inc have provided their views on the course…

What made you decide to undertake the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology (FPT) Course?

Daniela: The contents of the FPT course seemed comprehensive and with the right technical level. The idea was to enhance my knowledge of packaging from a science and technology perspective to support my current role in R&D.

Julie: I had been researching for a detailed on-line course on basics of packaging for quite some time. I really wanted to broaden my knowledge on packaging technology so I thought I needed to do some studying, but it had to be flexible with my time at work. So when I came across the AIP and learned that they were offering the On-line FPT course, it was the perfect solution.

How long did the FPT Course take and was it flexible for your working hours?

Daniela: Less than a year and yes it was quite flexible. I could have completed it faster but several projects within my role took priority.

Julie: It took me 8 months to finish the whole course. Yes it was flexible since I was able to spend an hour or two to go through each module.

What modules and lesson bundles stood out as the most interesting?

Daniela: I found that the Polymers, flexible packaging, moulding and extrusion modules were all interesting. Also all the ones referring to plastics, as it was an area I was not that familiar with, but having a Food Engineering background helped me to understand the chemistry side of those modules. I did learn interesting facts with every module though.

Julie: Every module was interesting for me, especially those that I have not been working on in my current job or have an interest in, but was not just able to learn in detail before. To name some Market Research, Graphic Design, Colour Perception, Box Compression Strength Workshop, Filling System, Special Designs and Sustainable Packaging were also interesting modules.
