ABOUT:

O-I has a strong Australian manufacturing presence, producing approximately 2.7 billion bottles and jars for their many customers every year.
.

Glass is infinitely recyclable, and using recycled glass (or cullet) in the glass manufacturing process brings huge benefits such as reducing raw materials, energy and carbon emissions – delivering a far more sustainable process.
.

O-I has a goal to increase their average cullet percentage in Australia from 39% to 50% by 2025. This will be supported by O-I’s cullet production plant in Brisbane, which serves the recycled glass needs of the region.
.

The site was co-developed by O-I and the Australian Packaging Covenant in 2014 and is the only Australian facility with processing capabilities, featuring:

  1. Optical processing: Where they sort through recycled material, using state-of-the-art technology to remove paper, plastic and organics and divide the glass into two colour streams – flint or clear glass, and a mix of amber and green glass we call gramber.
  2. Flat glass crushing: Laminated and flat glass is crushed and laminate is removed, producing furnace-ready cullet.

Brisbane Cullet now represents some $10m of investment and is the largest investment of its type in Queensland. It is responsible for the creation of 26 new jobs in the area, and processes over 140,000 tonnes of recycled glass per year, including glass normally downcycled or sent to a landfill.
.

On the tour: Attendees will see O-I’s cullet plant, including seeing in feed materials such as COEX and MRF, plus the processing shed where the material is cleaned and sorted in to the finished product.
.

NB: The optical sorting lines are housed within the processing shed.
