The AIP would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Shannon Doherty-Andall MAIP, CPP, Sustainability Manager, Australian Beverages Council on successfully achieving the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation. The CPP program has been accepted as the global recognition as a packaging professional and therefore the CPP designation has now become the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals.
.
We invited Shannon to share with us what attaining the Certified Packaging Professional Designation means to her…

1. How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Shannon:
I have been working across sustainability and packaging for around 10 years, with experience spanning food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and broader packaging sustainability and policy. My key areas of focus include sustainable packaging design and reform, circular economy policy, and industry-led sustainability and extended producer responsibility programs, particularly in the non-alcoholic beverage sector. I also spend a lot of time working on the practical side of packaging challenges, helping businesses understand what upcoming requirements mean in the real world and how to prepare for them.

2. What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?

Shannon:
I applied for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) program because I wanted to formally validate my packaging knowledge and strengthen the technical side of my work. Packaging sits at the intersection of sustainability outcomes, design choices, manufacturing realities, regulation, and consumer behaviour, and I have always believed it is important to be able to speak confidently across all of those areas. The CPP designation felt like a really strong way to reinforce that foundation, and to ensure I am continuing to grow professionally alongside the pace of change in the packaging space.

3. How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual?

Shannon:
Becoming a Certified Packaging Professional is genuinely a meaningful achievement for me. I have put a lot of time into building my packaging expertise over the years, and earning the CPP designation feels like a clear milestone that reflects that work. On a personal level, it also gives me more confidence when I am engaging in complex technical discussions with industry, regulators, and stakeholders. It is also a reminder that the details matter, and that taking the time to deepen technical capability is always worth it.

4. How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?

Shannon:
I think having the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is incredibly important. Packaging professionals are often solving high-impact problems every day, but the complexity of that work isn’t always recognised externally. Designations like the CPP help lift the visibility and credibility of packaging as a profession and reinforces that packaging is not just “a box or a bottle”; but rather that it is a highly skilled discipline that influences sustainability outcomes, product performance, safety, supply chain efficiency, and compliance.

5. Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?

Shannon:
Yes, definitely. One of the biggest takeaways for me was how valuable it is to step back and revisit the fundamentals. Even if you work in packaging every day, the CPP process reinforces the technical building blocks and helps connect areas you may not always work across directly. It also strengthened my ability to think about packaging decisions more holistically, considering materials, performance requirements, machinery constraints, and end-of-life outcomes together, rather than in isolation.

6. What next for your career?

Shannon:
I am excited to keep building my work in sustainability and packaging into the next phase of my career, particularly where it supports real-world impact at scale. In the near term, I will continue focusing on industry sustainability priorities, practical implementation challenges, and supporting the packaging transition across areas like circular economy policy, extended producer responsibility systems, and packaging design improvements. I am also keen to continue growing in international policy and cross-sector collaboration, as packaging and sustainability challenges increasingly need global coordination and shared solutions.

The AIP would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dheeraj Kumar MAIP, CPP, Group Packaging Manager, Tradekings on successfully achieving the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation. The CPP program has been accepted as the global recognition as a packaging professional and therefore the CPP designation has now become the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals.
.
We invited Dheeraj to share with us what attaining the Certified Packaging Professional Designation means to him…

1. How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Dheeraj:
I have been working in the packaging industry for over 10 years, primarily in flexible packaging across FMCG and food sectors. My expertise includes quality management, lamination & extrusion processes, packaging material development, supplier audits, and troubleshooting production issues. I also focus on process improvement, customer complaint resolution, and shelf life enhancement projects.

2. What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?

Dheeraj:
I wanted to benchmark my knowledge against global packaging standards and gain an internationally recognised qualification. The CPP designation aligns with my goal of working in a structured, technical, and future-ready packaging environment. It was important for me to validate my experience and deepen my understanding of core packaging principles..

3. How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual?

Dheeraj:
Achieving the CPP designation is a major milestone in my career. It reinforces my commitment to professional excellence and continuous learning. Personally, it has boosted my confidence and positioned me strongly for global packaging opportunities. It also reflects the hard work and dedication I have invested in the industry.

4. How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?

Dheeraj:
Having the CPP designation provides a credible, standardised way to recognise technical expertise in the packaging profession. It elevates the value of packaging specialists whose work is often behind the scenes but critical to product quality and safety. The designation helps raise the overall professional standing of packaging roles within manufacturing and brand organisations.

5. Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?

Dheeraj:
The CPP content helped refresh and structure my existing knowledge while expanding my understanding of materials science, sustainability, and global packaging regulations. It strengthened my technical foundations and improved my decision-making in actual plant situations. I also gained a broader perspective on packaging beyond flexible materials.

6. What next for your career?

Dheeraj:
I plan to continue advancing in packaging leadership roles and contributing to stronger quality systems and innovation projects. My next focus is to gain deeper expertise in sustainable packaging, food safety, and advanced barrier technologies. I want to contribute more to quality improvement, zero-defect performance, and technical innovation. Having the CPP has now motivated me to target higher technical and leadership roles in packaging.

Please join us in congratulating Pierre for his outstanding achievement.

How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Pierre:
I commenced in the industry in 1984 after studying pharmacy and joining a large pharmaceutical manufacturer. After a year of doing drug analysis an offer came up to become involved in packaging. I jumped at the opportunity of getting out of the laboratory and venturing into the world of packaging. I was asked by the CEO to find a university somewhere in the world to do a post graduate degree in Packaging. I found Brunel University in London where I completed a Master’s Degree in Packaging Engineering.
.
It is because of my undergraduate studies that I have developed an affinity for pharmaceutical packaging. I enjoy packaging problem solving in a production environment because in my early years in pharma where I spent 6 years in the manufacturing of liquid, parenterals and solids and where the packaging was diverse and there was lots to learn in packaging when it came to output on the diverse filling machines. It was during these years in production that I completed a Master’s Degree in Production from University of Hertfordshire, UK.

What made you originally apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?

Pierre:
Whilst involved in the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) as VP education I wanted the WPO to have an international recognised accreditation because we had no idea of the various qualifications of the wide variety of people involved in the WPO. The then WPO President Tom Schneider tasked me to find such a reputable accreditation that would fit with the needs of the WPO and was internationally recognised. At the same time the AIP was also in discussions with IoPP to also launch the program into Australasia.
.
The WPO used the AIP development of the program as a test case for how it could work for the rest of the world. The WPO program was borne out of the AIP program.
.
At this early stage the AIP became involved and they became first association to offer the CPP outside of the USA. I attained my CPP through the AIP and I became the first person to become a CPP in Australasia. The AIP had the tenacity to become the first association to offer the program for Australasia and they now have many CPP’s in the region.

Why was it so important for you to attaining the CPP designation?

Pierre:
It is important that when the global packaging community comes together we can easily recognise other professionals that are equally qualified in the various disciplines in packaging. The CPP designation gives us all a sense of belonging to a bigger global community.
.
Recognition however must go to the AIP for all of their hard work in becoming the first association outside of the IoPP to offer the program and for taking the lead in the WPO Members. The AIP supports the WPO CPP program and works with many people around the world today to help guide them to attain the designation. In fact the General Secretary of the WPO undertook his CPP through the AIP.

How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?

Pierre:
It is the ultimate and only method of ensuring that you are recognised internationally in the packaging industry, through this CPP accreditation program. The CPP is also recognised in over 64 WP Member countries which will help you to look for jobs overseas. Just knowing this is so encouraging and inspiring.

Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?

Pierre:
It has reminded me just how diverse packaging really is, all encompassing, where the left and right brain is required to solve the myriad of options and opportunities. It is a field where on-going studying and learning, be that in conferences, classroom, reading, discussions, webinars, seminars are all truly necessary, so as to stay abreast of developments.

What does it feel like to be the first Lifetime CPP in Australasia?

Pierre:
If it inspires others to gain their CPP in packaging, then it has been worthwhile. Like anything there always has to be a first, I just happened to be in the right place and at the right time and nudged at the beginning by Nerida Kelton to attain the CPP designation.

What advice would you offer anyone in the industry looking to become a Certified Packaging Professional?

Pierre:
What has driven me is to ensure that growth in education persists, it is encouraging to witness this enhancement and growth of the packaging industry over these ensuing years.
.
This highly regarded Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) program is really gaining momentum across all nations in the packaging professional space.
.
The AIP is very intentional about education, and ensuring that it remains current giving the industry the advantage of access to cutting-edge packaging developments globally, and the CPP program is part of that education.
.
If your intention is to remain in the packaging industry, and you are wanting to ensure on-going learning, then the CPP program is for you. It certainly gives you a sense of belonging and a great personal sense of achievement.
.

The AIP would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sefah Usmani AAIP, CPP; Dr Johannes Bergmair MAIP, CPP and Dr Shira Rosen MAIP, CPP on successfully achieving the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation. The CPP program has been accepted as the global recognition as a packaging professional and therefore the CPP designation has now become the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals.

1. How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Sefah:
I have been working in the packaging industry for around 10 years. My experience is working with the Metal Packaging Companies catering to the companies in the business of packing Food as well non-food sectors.
Johannes:
I started as project associate and PhD student in OFI packaging institute in July 2000 – so nearly 23 years! My expertise is more on food/pharmaceutical packaging. I deal a lot with food contact materials (legislation), hygiene management systems and quality management (e.g. packaging specification). As World Packaging Organisation (WPO) General Secretary I’m also proud of my international connections in the field of packaging business.
Shira:
I began my journey in packaging in 1993 at Unilever, which means I am now completing 30 years in the field, and I still have a strong passion for packaging and continue to learn new things every day. After 7 years at Unilever, I moved to the Strauss Group, where I became the head of the packaging development department for 18 years. During my tenure at international food and beverage companies, I was exposed to a wide variety of products and needs, worked with most of packaging materials and technologies, which has given me expertise in developing packaging for this industry.

In recent years, I have held the position of chairperson of the Israeli Packaging Institute, and I have also opened my own consultancy company – www.packtech.co.il – which specialises in sustainability, innovation, and efficiency in packaging. Through these roles, I have been exposed to new fields and many startups in particularly on sustainable and smart packaging that enhances and expands the role of packaging in our lives.

I also enjoy sharing my knowledge through teaching in the Academy, as well as conducting trainings and speaking at conferences.

2. What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?

Sefah:
I decided to enrol in the FPT course and then to apply for CPP Designation in order to broaden my knowledge about Packaging.
Johannes:
Well my friends in WPO pushed me a little bit, to be true. It simply was a bit awkward that I didn’t had my CPP yet. I think in the global packaging community the CPP is a recognition that you have a high level of packaging knowledge.
Shira:
I decided to apply for the CPP designation following a WPO board meeting where the CPP Designation was presented. I thought it would be challenging and interesting to pursue and could open up new opportunities for me.

3. How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual?

Sefah:
It is a very important recognition and will help to keep me motivated and always focus on the continuous development.
Johannes:
Personally I simply wanted to have it – as so many of my friends in the WPO also have attained this designation. The CPP designation is a door-opener – e.g. you can only work as WPO trainer if you have a CPP.
Shira:
It is an honour to be acknowledged as a globally recognised packaging professional, and it is a valuable marketing tool for new clients who are not familiar with my experience. Being a part of a professional community within the field opens up many opportunities such as new collaborations, facilitates knowledge sharing, and keeps one updated on the latest developments in the field.

4. How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?

Sefah:
It is a very important recognition for the individuals working in the packaging industry and those in the industry should plan to get the certification.
Johannes:
It is simply a unique program – worldwide. If on global level you want to show your high level of packaging knowledge it is through CPP only. I don’t know any other certifications scheme known that widely and recognised by all relevant players.
Shira:
I believe that being a professional in the packaging field requires a deep understanding of all regulations, materials, technologies, and their influence on the entire value chain. The CPP designation verifies a broad and in-depth understanding of the packaging field and distinguishes real professionals. The importance of packaging is not widely known yet, and there is an opportunity to promote professional training and increase professionalism in the field. As the chairperson of the Israeli Packaging Institute, I would certainly implement the vision of the CPP designation.

5. Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?

Sefah:
One should always have the eagerness to gain knowledge. It really helped me to have the knowledge about other packaging materials as well.
Johannes:
If you think – even after more than 20 years experience – you know everything in packaging technology, you just show, that you haven’t understood the world of packaging at all. Packaging is such a big and complex field of knowledge; and changing permanently. So I was more than happy to update my knowledge on transport packaging and the design process through my CPP designation.
Shira:
Studying for the CPP test refreshed my knowledge and sharpened my insights, which I later applied in my work and training. Additionally, the on-going activities of the IOPP and AIP keep me updated with interesting webinars.

6. What next for your career?

Sefah:
To further add value to any organisation I am working with my skills, knowledge and experience.
Johannes:
Thank you. I’m happy at the moment. But with the CPP in my pocket I know, that many things would be possible (if I just had some time for it.
Shira:
I would like to expand my consulting activities and training to additional countries. Specifically, I am considering establishing an on-line packaging academy, with the goal of obtaining recognition through the Certified Professional Development (CPD) points than come through the CPP program globally.

The AIP is pleased to advise that the AIP President and two Board Members have become the latest Certified Packaging Professionals for the Australasian Region.

The Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals. CPP credentials demonstrates that a packaging practitioner possesses packaging knowledge, experience and skills to the degree that they deserve recognition as a true packaging professional; a cut above their peers. Attaining the CPP designation is an excellent investment in professional development and the credential defines the packaging professional and allows organisations to seek out and hire the right professional based on verified knowledge, skills and industry contributions.

Jason Fields, FAIP, CPP, Procurement Category Manager – Packaging, JBS, George Ganzenmuller Dip.Pkg.Tech. FAIP, CPP, Innovation Manager, Opal Fibre Packaging and Kevin Truong Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP, CPP, Packaging Development Manager, Primo Foods have 80 years of packaging experience between them, with two graduating with the internationally recognised Diploma in Packaging Technology.

According to Jason Fields attaining the CPP designation was a significant personal achievement and his first formal packaging qualification since his first degree many years ago.

“Attaining the CPP is such a milestone for me, as whenever I see other people with the designation, I know I am talking to someone with strong technical industry knowledge who possesses the fundamental understanding of all packaging materials and understands how primary, secondary and tertiary packaging materials work as a total ‘package’. Now that I have my CPP I am extremely proud to be recognised as a part of this group of packaging professionals across the globe.” Mr Fields said.

George Ganzenmuller added that he saw attaining the CPP as a great way to complement his earlier Diploma in Packaging Technology Degree and as a means of bridging his own knowledge base.

“I saw the CPP process as both a learning and validation process for my own career path, as well as a positive reinforcement with my work and industry collaborations. The CPP is an on-going process that prompts individuals to stay current, stay active within the profession, and most importantly encourages continual improvement and education in our chosen field within the industry. I feel the CPP program is a proactive and positive way to stay relevant, up-to-date and connected with the networks we create. It is the trust and respect within collaborative partnerships that helps drives success,” Mr Ganzenmuller said.

Kevin Truong undertook the CPP program as he was looking for the next educational challenge after graduating from the Diploma in Packaging Technology.

“Applying for, and obtaining the CPP was a natural choice after spending nearly 14 years in the packaging industry. Obtaining the CPP designation not only ticks off one of my important career goals, but also makes me feel good. For me the CPP designation is the true testament for the contributions that an individual makes in the packaging industry, be it directly or indirectly, so that said individual can be proud of their contributions and achievements thus far. I also look forward to contributing and achieving even more in the exciting future that this industry offers. A huge thank you must also go to the AIP for offering the CPP designation in the Australasian region.” Mr Truong said.

“Our industry is such an dynamic, ever-evolving and growing sector which is currently navigating significant environmental and social changes. It is so important to continually recognise the skills, creativity and professionalism of all packaging technologists and designers within the industry who help companies around the world navigate broader industry challenges.” Mr Ganzenmuller said.

The CPP program is owned by the IoPP and is delivered exclusively through the AIP in Australasia. The CPP Program is internationally recognised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). Contact the AIP today to find out how you can become a Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) in the Australasian Region. http://aipack.com.au/education/certified-packaging-professional-cpp/

The AIP asked the latest Certified Packaging Professional (CPP), Suzy Taguiam AAIP, CPP, a few questions about her career, packaging education and why the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is so important for the industry…

Q1: How long have you been in the industry? What are your areas of expertise?

Suzy:
I have worked in different multinational FMCG companies for the last 20 years. Most of this time was spent working as a hands-on engineer involved in diagnosing and anticipating potential issues related to product, process, and packaging as they relate to design, specification, equipment, and material interface. My areas of expertise are innovation, problem solving and continuous improvement of packaging, equipment, and processes through application of engineering concepts, material science, experimental design, and statistical methods. As a packaging professional I am responsible for managing activities for the design, development, and implementation of packaging for NPD, sustainability, and renovations projects.

Q2: What made you apply for the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) Designation?

Suzy:
The primary reason I applied for the CPP Designation is because I wanted an international certification program that could evaluate my competency and proficiency as a packaging professional. Committing to attain this global recognition also demonstrates my passion and dedication to building expertise in all areas of packaging.

Q3: How important is attaining the CPP designation to you as an individual?

Suzy:
I decided to make the CPP designation the focal point of my packaging career since learning of its rigorous requirements. When IoPP informed me that I passed in the upper percentile I felt extremely happy and proud. Achieving CPP has elevated my confidence that I possess the valuable packaging technology knowledge, experience, and skills to be successful in the packaging industry.

Q4: How important is the CPP designation for the greater recognition of people in the packaging industry?

Suzy:
To date, only 2000+ packaging professionals have attained CPP status globally and for good reason – the requirements needed to be certified are stringent and not easily attainable. The process is like going through the eye of a needle but once an individual gains CPP designation it provides greater recognition since the industry recognises it as a commitment to excellence in the packaging profession.

Q5: Were there any new learnings or takeaways that you gained from the experience?

Suzy:
As public attention to environmental issues continue to grow and the packaging impact now considered a mainstream news item, I learned it is now more crucial than ever that packaging professionals are equipped with the right (verified) knowledge to ensure sustainable solutions will not result in compromising the ultimate purpose of packaging which is still to maintain the ability to protect, preserve, contain, communicate, and transport a product all the way to the consumer.

Q6: What next for your career?

Suzy:
The rate of change happening in the field of packaging in terms of research, development and innovation is exponential and I am very excited to be part of this positive transformation. For this reason, my focus is entirely on advancing my career and professional development by continuing education, training and staying abreast with the latest trends in packaging. I am also keen to give back to the packaging community by way of mentoring and knowledge sharing with peers who are passionate about it.

The Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation for the industry is offered exclusively through the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) in Australasia, the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation is the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals. CPP credential demonstrates that a packaging practitioner possesses packaging knowledge, experience and skills to the degree that they deserve recognition as a true packaging professional; a cut above their peers. Contact the AIP today to find out how you can become a Certified Packaging Professional. info@aipack.com.au
