Achieving the lowest possible environmental impact can sometimes be very challenging, particularly when balancing various environmental criteria with other functional and commercial considerations. The Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) have been established to assist the design and manufacture of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging that meets the sometimes-conflicting demands of the market, consumer protection, fit-for-purpose and functional packaging, shelf life, recycling and recovery and the overall environmental impacts. Sustainable Packaging ultimately ensures that the design provides the lowest possible environmental impact compared to existing or conventional packaging and also takes into consideration trade-offs and un-intentional consequences through inadequate packaging design. Costs, price sensitivities, regional-focus, competitiveness of the country are all considerations that also need be discussed during this important training course run by the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP).
