This is the fifth year in a row that the ANZ region has maintained a top five spot against some very tough competition from extremely large countries. ANZ PIDA Winners have been internationally recognised with 18x awards across 8 x categories including: Packaging Materials & Components, Food, Household, Health & Personal Care, E-Commerce, Labelling & Decoration, Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Transit.

Don Deli Cuts enveloped in innovation
DON has brought a new innovative and intuitive flow wrapped (envelope pack) with reseal functionality to Australia. The secondary seal and reseal functionality is secured on the reverse of the pack with a resealable label with clear instructions on how to open and close the pack for optimal freshness and removing the need to decant product into sealed containers or using secondary plastic for wrapping in the moisture and flavour.

When designing the pack and adhesive label there was consideration for the area to grip to open. Optimal grip area has been considered and the pack is easy to grip, control and manoeuvre between hands. The textured finish on the film provides friction for grip and opening. The opening does not require excess number of actions to open; does not cause pain or discomfort and there are no sharp edges or awkward hand movements. No tools are required to open the pack.

The pack has been designed to make it obvious where and how to open the pack. The aqua blue sash across the top of the pack with a picture of the back of pack aims to direct consumers to turn over for opening. Once turned over, the label has a four-step process with legible and easy to understand opening instructions with images for opening and resealing the product.

The colours and print have been used for high contrast. Font is large and images support the directions to assist the consumer. The expiry on the back of pack is black against a transparent film for visibility.

This innovative packaging solution delivers on providing consumers with a convenient easy open/easy close pack that is compact, provides product visibility, minimises the mess of liquid in the pack, is more sustainable but does not compromise food quality and freshness.

The reseal functionality preserves food freshness, sealing in moisture and flavour, thus reducing wastage due to dry, spoiled product. The packaging enables consumers to retain product in its original packaging for fridge storage, thus product information such as use by dates are visible to consumers. It also prevents wasteful double packaging through use of cling wrap and therefore reduces packaging disposal and of course minimises food waste in the household through its innovative design features.

Naked Rivals created to save imperfect fruit
Naked Rivals are on a mission to save imperfect fruit and also end food waste at home, providing consumers with convenient food options that don’t compromise their need for great tasting, healthy ingredients that are sustainably packaged.

Naked Rivals provide consumers with access to frozen 100% fresh lemon and 100% lime juice cubes. In each pack, consumers receive the juice from 6 lemons or limes, conveniently portioned into cubes – with each cube equal to the juice from half a lemon or lime. The product has a shelf life of 2.5 years, extending the shelf life of the fruit and the product reduces the amount of citrus waste being disposed of in landfill.

Naked Rivals ensures that any fruit damaged in unforeseen weather events can be saved and consumed through the new product range. The new and unique product ensures that consumers, and also food service professionals, do not over purchase the ingredient and that it is always on hand. Naked Rivals also reduces reliance on importing the ingredients of juices out of season, which lowers the overall environmental impact of the product.

The world-first product offers single serve, portion controlled, Naked Rivals are taking imperfect fruit and making pure juice cubes precision volumes of liquid. The juice is sealed and frozen immediately once it has been filled in the bespoke 100% sustainable packaging which includes an rPET tray and a kerbside recyclable cardboard outer. The printing on the outer uses ink from vegetable oil extract. The packaging is unique with the easy-peel film and tray allowing consumers to pop out cubes with ease.

The bespoke recyclable rPET tray with tamper proof features is a unique sustainable packaging for juice. This product uses only Australian fruit, so producers receive a good price for their imperfect fruit and their produce doesn’t end up in landfill.

Naked Rivals was born from a simple idea: that even the most natural of ingredients can still be improved with a dash of ingenuity. Their mission is to fight food waste at home, promoting healthier lifestyles in a more sustainable way. Naked Rivals saves imperfect fruit from being wasted and reduces the environmental impact of 600 million lemons and limes being thrown into landfill. Citrus is just the beginning for the Naked Rivals brand, and they plan to execute other ingredients such as stock, herbs in the future. There is no other product like this globally, so they have created a new food category focussed on health, sustainability, convenience at an affordable price.

KOi refillable foaming handwash starter kit and 4 pk refillable handwash tablets from Coles Group were recognised with a silver President award and JBS Swift Lamb Cutlets CRYOVAC Darfesh Mono-PET rollstock (SEE) took out the coveted Gold for the Sustainability special award category.

John Bigley, AIP President, accepted the Silver President award for Coles and Nerida Kelton, wearing her Vice President Sustainability and Save Food hat for the WPO, was extremely proud to have been able to personally present Alan Adams with the Gold Sustainability award.

As the silver winner for the President Award Natalie Shaw, Sustainable Packaging Lead at Coles Group said that ‘Winning a Silver President Award, on top of winning a WorldStar general award, is a significant achievement for the Coles Own Brand Team and we are proud to represent Australia and New Zealand in this prestigious awards program. It reinforces that working in packaging is a dynamic space that celebrates innovation and sustainable design.”

“The Coles team are committed to improve sustainability across our product packaging that, in turn, enables customers to divert packaging waste, including plastic, from landfill. Winning two Worldstar awards is a high recognition and provides motivation to keep improving and innovating as we work towards supporting industry in delivering the 2025 national packaging targets.” she said.

According to Alan Adams, Sustainability Director APAC, SEE, “We were surprised to win the Gold Sustainability Award and are thrilled to receive this pinnacle of recognition for our teams at SEE and JBS teams who drive – behind the scenes – the delivery of sustainable high-performance packs to market. A big thank you to the WPO, and the AIP via the PIDA Awards, for this opportunity to celebrate and recognise our great teams.”

Brian Petroff, General Manager of JBS Southern Value Add and Retail Ready added that JBS is proud of the recent Gold Sustainability special award recognition from the WorldStar Awards.

“We take great pride in the innovative solutions developed by JBS Southern – Value Add, which actively promotes sustainability. With this recent achievement, we successfully reduced a significant amount of plastic waste from landfills. Consumers are more than ever conscience of packaging waste and so are we, our packaging solutions aim to minimise waste while guaranteeing the visually appealing and durable retail-ready packaging JBS Southern is known for. Our team continues to find sustainable solutions right across the business, and it is fantastic to receive such high recognition with this award.” Mr Petroff said.

Nerida Kelton also added “What an absolute honour to have been able to celebrate the ANZ PIDA award winning packs, but to also present the Gold Sustainability award to JBS and SEE. A very special moment was to also find out on the night that Coles received the silver President’s award which is a remarkable achievement,”

“For me personally, it truly is a proud moment to see how well PIDA winners continue to do on the global stage, how we all come together to celebrate the companies that are recognised and how we are the loudest cheer squad in the room year-on-year. To receive a WorldStar Packaging Award is becoming more difficult each year, as there are so many entries from across the globe to choose from. The latest round of WorldStar Packaging Awards attracted 435 entries from 41 countries and 35 judges determined 214 winners for the 2024 round of the awards program. For ANZ to do so well each year is a true testament to how innovative and intuitive our packaging designs really are on a global scale. Congratulations to the 16x companies and we can’t wait for 2025.” she said.

The AIP also had a large area in ProPak Asia that showcased 2023 PIDA winners for all of the visitors of the exhibition to see. The area had high traffic for the four days of the show with many enquiries about the packaging designs.

ANZ PIDA Winners have once again been internationally recognised with 16x awards across 8x categories including Packaging Materials & Components, Food, Other, Household, Health & Personal Care, E-Commerce, Labelling & Decoration and Alcoholic Beverages. Three of our innovations were recognised across multiple categories – the DualPakECO certified compostable food trays (Confoil/BASF), Wine Protector Packaging (Planet Protector Packaging) and KOi foaming handwash starter kit and refill solution by Coles Group. In addition first time entrant Australian Organic Food Co was recognised for the Australasian-first Minestrone Soup mono material retort pouch (Flavour Makers & Toppan) and Future Ecology – Emguard (Oji Fibre Solutions) from New Zealand. Only winners from the Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PDIA) awards are eligible in the region to enter the prestigious global WorldStar Packaging awards, that are run by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).

The AIP is pleased to advise that Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Student winners from the Industrial Design School at the University of New South Wales took out 4x major awards and 8x finalist awards in the latest edition of the WorldStar Student awards. The PIDA Student Awards program is the exclusive entry point for the WorldStar Student Awards for Australia and New Zealand.

The WorldStar Student Awards competition is owned and produced by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and is an international packaging design competition for students – undergraduate or graduate – from countries around the world who are involved in projects in the field of packaging, including structural design and/or graphic design. The WorldStar Student Awards are designed to encourage and show the talents of students, as well as new and innovative ideas and thinking in the field of packaging.

The latest round of the global WorldStar student awards program saw 253 entries from students in 25 different countries, with only 137 entries selected for awards.

Jeremy Marchant was the standout student for 2024 with the innovative Sushi Takeaway Packaging receiving Australia’s first-ever Silver Medal overall winner recognition, a Gold Medal for Sustainability and a Silver Medal for Food Packaging.

According to Jeremy “I am immensely proud to be Australian, and representing Australia in design has been a dream of mine. I like to think this WorldStar Student award is a milestone in my work in design, as it is the first time my work has been recognised outside my mandatory university studies. I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to take part in this competition and overwhelmed with the results. Although I am quite new to the design industry, I have enjoyed the community that I have been introduced to.”

Ziqian (Kevin) Chen was recognised with Australia’s first-ever Silver Medal for Health and Personal Care Packaging for the Railok: Child-Resistant & Accessible Vitamin Bottle. Kevin was also recognised with a Finalist award for the Railok packaging design and for his second entry Twistin: Sustainable & Reusable Sport Drink Bottle Cap.

Kevin Chen added that “I am so glad and surprised to receive this WorldStar Student award and be the first Australian student to win a Silver in the Health and Personal Care category. It is a huge motivation for me to maintain the passion of industrial design and creating ideas that can help the world and the society. Thanks again to my tutors Gonzalo Portas, David Scholsner and Rohaan Taneja. They all gave me a lot of help and advice to make me be better and more confident. I am also appreciated that UNSW Industrial Design and Mariano Ramirez giving me the chance to take part in this competition through the AIP Student Awards. It is my first time standing in a global stage to show my design to the world. I believe I should be proud of myself!”

The AIP would also like to congratulate the additional 5x students who were awarded finalists certificates – Fengyuan Liu for CBox, Amy Feng for Sustainable Tea Packaging System, Jiaying (Nina) Lai for No Lid Paper Cup, Zac Blair for BoxOtape and Zihan (Eleanor) Tang for MeCube.

Dr Mariano Ramirez, Senior Lecturer, Director of Industrial Design Discipline, School of Built Environment, University of New South Wales added that “The outstanding achievements of UNSW Industrial Design students in the PIDA and Worldstar Student Awards, marked by prestigious recognitions such as the Silver Overall Winner and multiple Sustainability Gold and Silver Trophies, are a testament to the effective synergy between education and industry. These accomplishments not only showcase the exceptional talent and dedication of our students but also highlight the transformative impact of the Australian Institute of Packaging in integrating real-world challenges into our academic curriculum. The focus on circular, accessible, and waste-reducing packaging solutions directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. AIP’s engagement in this process has been instrumental in nurturing a new generation of designers, poised to address the pressing environmental challenges of our time. This collaboration not only propels our students into a global arena where they can contribute meaningfully to sustainable development, but also reinforces UNSW’s commitment to spearheading sustainable design education.”

The AIP encourages all Universities across Australia and New Zealand to consider working with the Institute on a packaging project for the PIDA Student Awards in 2024.

Australian delegation attends 2023 WorldStar Packaging Awards to pick up 22 awards; including 3x special awards

On the 8th of May the 2023 WorldStar Packaging Awards, which are run by the World Packaging Organisation, saw 300 people from over 40 countries converge at interpack in Duesseldorf, Germany. Of the 300 guests, 20 were Australians who had travelled half way across the globe to receive their awards and to be recognised by their global peers for their packaging designs. Australian & New Zealand companies received the second highest amount of wins in the world behind Japan. This is the second year in a row that the region has dominated the global awards program, which is a true reflection of the innovative packaging designs being developed in the Southern Hemisphere.

ANZ packaging wins 3x special awards to make history

Not only were ANZ PIDA Award winners recognised with 19x awards across 9x categories but 2x of the companies also picked up the coveted WorldStar Special Awards which were announced live on the night.

Caps & Closures was recognised with silver recognition for two different products – the NEW Accessible Packaging design special award for the EzyGrip and Packaging that Saves Food special award for the ThermoShield Temperature Monitoring System – Food. This brought the tally for Caps & Closures to 6x WorldStar awards; making them the first Australian company in history to win this amount of awards.

According to Brendon Holmes, Managing Director of Caps & Closures “When the recognition comes from your industry peers, representing our Australia comes with immense pride. Receiving two WorldStar Special Awards recognising our efforts in Save Food Packaging and Accessible Packaging was tremendous. Our dedicated team has invested hours, weeks and months into finding solutions for challenging issues we all face as consumers. Our focus on fighting food waste, brand protection, accessibility and sustainability remains, and these awards inspire us further to continue down this path. It was good to see many companies at interpack adopting similar innovative solutions that improve the consumer experience in accessibility and functionality.”

BioPak also made history being the first Australian company to win the coveted GOLD Sustainability special award for the Sugarcane Pulp Hot & Cold Cup Lids. This brought BioPak’s tally to 3x for the 2023 edition.

Gary Smith, Chief Executive Officer, BioPak who was on a jetlag high during the evening added that ‘Each day we come into BioPak with a passion for change and a passion for sustainable improvement in our industry. There is little focus on anything else. Working at a screen all day, working in a closed environment not understanding the impact of what we take for granted as our day-to-day, has a danger of stuffing passion. Attending the WorldStar Awards and being surrounded by so many innovators and change makers was humbling and a boost to make me excite all at our business into working harder and smarter at continual improvement and sustainable developments! We were humbled to be singled out in an evening to receive the coveted Gold for the Sustainability special award, where there is so much good in overcoming mediocrity and bad practices. Seeing so many new developments and innovations, and meeting so many talented people was a privilege!”

First Time winners

In addition ANZ had one table of first-time winners such as Result Group, Ego Pharmaceutical, JBS and Opal which was a great moment to watch.

“Being amongst global peers and fellow Australian Worldstar award winners was one hell of an experience that’s for sure! Sharing the night itself with our project partners was sensational, but bringing the award home to the team and seeing the pride on every face is something I will never forget.” Michael Dossor MAIP, Managing Director, Result Group.

The 9x general categories where ANZ designs were recognised include Food, Fresh Fruit & Vegetables, Beverages, Household, Transit, Medical & Pharmaceutical, Health & Personal Care, Labelling & Decoration and Other.

On January 9th, 2023 – WPO (World Packaging Organisation) announced the winners of the WorldStar 2023 Awards, and Result Group is a proud winner in the categoryof Fresh Fruits and Vegetables with its Australian Table Grapes Traceability Pilot.

WPO (World Packaging Organisation) is a unique organisation contributing the growth of a sustainable global packaging.

In another record year, the Awards registered 488 entries, from 41 countries, growing from 440 competitors from 37 countries in 2022. “These numbers confirm that WorldStar is the most prestigious and important packaging award in the globe”, celebrates Soha Atallah, WorldStar Coordinator and WPO Vice President of Events.

Packages eligible for WorldStar Awards are those that have already received a national or regional packaging award from a packaging competition that is recognised by WPO, during the last 2 years.

In 2022 Result Group was awarded Silver in “Outside of the Box Design” with the Australian Table Grape Association (ATGA) traceability pilot for the 2022 (AIP) Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards.

The Australian Table Grapes Traceability Pilot is one of the largest traceability and authentication projects deployed in Australia. The outstanding achievements are the result of collaboration between Australian Table Grape Association, Agriculture Victoria, Perfection Fresh Australia, GS1 Australia, and Result Group. More than 840,000 units of table grapes, including bunch bags, clamshells, and cartons, were labelled with a unique serialised QR code, further enhanced with the use of GS1 Digital Link standards and exported to over 15 markets in the Asia Pacific Region.

“Agriculture Victoria is delighted to have been part of this award-winning pilot program by funding and partnering with the Australian Table Grape Association to pilot the use of Results Group traceability software with growers and exporters in the sector. We’re committed to working with industry to implement new traceability systems that maintain Australia’s competitiveness in international markets and ensure the safety and trustworthiness of produce delivered to overseas consumers. It’s a fantastic outcome to receive this industry recognition and I congratulate everyone who has been involved in this pilot program,” stated Agriculture Victoria Chief Executive, Matt Lowe.

To assist grape growers to connect with consumers and supply chains as well as consumer safety and quality standards, Result Group introduced an industry customised traceability platform, a label printing and management programme, NiceLabel, as well as process automation and scanning technologies, designed to collect end-to-end shipping data. The overall concept was to sell more Australia table grapes by proving authenticity and provenance. Setting high-quality Australian produce in a space of its own … all done with virtually no disruption to current grape harvest and packing processes.

Traceability is often viewed as an “evolving” technology, the recognition of an Australian company developing Australia’s export credentials “challenges” that theory. The technology exists, has been deployed and it can be done cost effectively, delivering a strong return on investment.

“In future, traceability will likely become a mandatory requirement, so it’s positive that the Australian table grape industry has a traceability package – now globally recognised for its innovation – for growers to embrace,” added Jeff Scott, ATGA CEO.

We’re really proud of the pilot and thank the Victorian Government for their support of the project. Thanks also to technology provider Result Group and producer-exporter Perfection Fresh for agreeing to participate in the pilot. To win a world award is an exciting achievement for the Australian Table Grape Association. There was a lot of thought and strategy that went into our traceability pilot to make sure it would be a success.”

The process of the traceability project starts at the farm, where the polybags that will be exported to over 15 markets in the Asia Pacific Region are given unique serialised GS1 Digital Link – enabled QR code labels. Labels also provide crucial traceability information about consumer pack units, cases, and pallet numbers, as well as time and temperature tracking information that was captured through the cloud database, in order to combat all types of food fraud.

The digital twin integrated in the QR code labels ensures that each one is unique and traceable.

Luke Gibson, a Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer, Perfection Fresh commented, “This significant award recognises the strong collaboration between a team of experienced and skilled stakeholders working together to overcome challenges and achieve a result, Perfection Fresh was proud to be part of this pilot project.

Packaging is the most important touchpoint for customer and consumer communication. This technology gave us, as a brand owner, the opportunity to ensure product safety and quality across the supply chain as well as obtain direct feedback from users on our product experience.”

Result Group are deeply honoured to have been chosen as a winner of the 2023 WorldStar awards among our global peers and to see the new technology utilised by the pilot enhance authenticity and provenance across the fresh produce sector.

“Winning the award is very humbling and a great recognition for our hard-working and dedicated team. Collaboration with current system vendors and developing interoperable protocols is always a challenge and requires trust and respect. The upside, it opens up new opportunities in the traceability sector, as we continue to strive to further innovative solutions in the Australian market. We couldn’t have done it without our partners, the Australian Table Grape Association, Agriculture Victoria, Perfection Fresh Australia, and GS1 Australia, so this is a joint triumph,” said Michael Dossor, Result Group General Manager.

WorldStar program highlights the global significance of packaging innovations by promoting technology and innovative solutions, recognising and inspiring packaging experts, and collaborating with brands to explore new ideas.

This is a fantastic opportunity for the packaging community to continue working in the space, finding the most effective solutions and share with the rest of the world.

“We would like to congratulate all project participants in this great achievement. This award is recognition that Australia has the capabilities, technology, and drive to be the world leader in traceability across agricultural sectors, but a lot still needs to be done.

We encourage industry and Australian governments to build on this success and turn traceability into a real differentiator of Australia agricultural exports in international markets,” said GS1 Australia Chief Customer Officer Marcel Sieira.

The complete list of winners is available both in WorldStar or WPO webpages – www.worldstar.org or www.worldpackaging.org – and they will be awarded in a Gala Ceremony on 6 May, during Interpack 2023, in Düsseldorf (Germany), to which Result Group will be present.
