2011 Awards of Excellence
The Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association announced today that submissions are open for the 2011 Awards of Excellence which will be announced at AUSPACK PLUS in March in Melbourne.

Proudly supported by DB Schenker, Midway Metals, PKN, SEW Eurodrive and SMC, the biennial Awards of Excellence are conducted by the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association to recognise the efforts of the successful companies, their employees and the skills required for their outstanding contribution to meet the needs of the packaging industry. The APPMA has broad entry criteria with entries encouraged and accepted from any company that meets the membership criteria of the Association.

According to Mr Rob Lawrence, Chairman, APPMA, the focus of the Awards is to be directed towards the business improvements, for example increase in sales or profit for the machinery supplier, or an efficiency increase, or cost reduction to the customer by using the packaging machinery. The technology associated with the Award entry will be considered but the tangible benefits to the supplier, the customer will be very important. The Awards will be presented to both the company submitting the award entry to the APPMA and where applicable to the company’s customer.

Awards categories include Export Achievement Award, Design Award, Customer Participation Award and the Imported Equipment Award.

2011 EXPORT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The recipient will have made a worthwhile contribution to an existing or new export market. Contributions can include establishing a new market, achieving a significant increase in sales by both the supplier and the customer, identifiable by monetary gain from an export activity. It can also be any developed packaging or processing machinery sold into overseas markets which contributes to improved business outcome, efficiency, sales and profit increases.

The 2009 winner was Fibre King. The Award was for end-of-line packaging solutions for an international pharmaceutical company. The range of equipment installed included case packing, check weighing, coding, palletising and depalletising systems at sites in Singapore, China and the Philippines.

2011 DESIGN AWARD
The Design Award will recognise the development of a packaging or processing line or module that results in the significant advancement of packaging and processing machinery technology by either introducing a new idea or modifying an existing principle. The design concept and implementation are weighted highly in the award decision, where better business performance must be achieved.

The 2009 winner was FoodMach. The Award was for a new version of its Robomatrix palletising system, expanding its range from high level and low level palletisers to multi line palletising by using newly designed Robostripper system to robotically place layers on multiple pallets.

2011 CUSTOMER PARTICIPATION AWARD
This Award has a major emphasis on the customisation of packaging and processing machinery which is required to suit a customer’s individual needs. The winner, individual or team will be able to demonstrate that the end user has experienced increased sales, increased plant efficiency and profitability. Customer improved outcomes will form a very large element of the Award decision.

The 2009 winners was Lakewood Corporation. The Award is to commend its completion of a special wrapping project for its customer CSR Bradford Insulation in Brisbane. The unique feature was to wrap loads up to 2.8 metres high at 60 pallets per hour, without a pallet which is rare and an abnormal occurrence.

2011 IMPORTED EQUIPMENT AWARD
This Award is to recognise the efforts of an APPMA Member or a Company eligible to be a APPMA Member who promotes their overseas principal’s equipment in the Australian market, where the equipment in itself represents a high standard of excellence in every respect relevant to the industry consistent with the standard applied. The equipment must be principally designed by an overseas supplier who is represented by an APPMA Member/ Company eligible to be an APPMA Member applying for the Award. Any developed packaging or processing machinery sold into Australia must demonstrate an increase in efficiency, sales and profit.

The 2009 winner was Orbital Wrap System. The Award was for the Italian Linea Pack range of orbital wrapping systems. The Award recognises the efforts of an agent in promoting its overseas principal’s equipment in the Australian market. The key criteria was the ability of the agent to offer the customer efficiencies across the board.

All submissions are due no later than Friday the 18th of February 2011.

The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) would like to congratulate Lenka Kvasnickova, Sunshine Coast TAFE, Queensland, for being awarded the gold award in the 2010 PCA Southern Cross Judges Rationale Award, which is sponsored by the Institute.

The Southern Cross Awards is a national packaging competition aimed at tertiary students studying design at Universities, TAFEs and Private Colleges. Students are provided with briefs, developed by the sponsors, and are required to produce innovative solutions to packaging design. The Judges Rationale Award is for the student that best produced excellence in research, documentation and presentation of their rationale. Lenka Kvasnickova’s entry was called ‘Twelve & Six’ and was the perfect rationale.

According to Mr Pierre Pienaar FAIP, National President of the AIP, “Lenka is a well balanced mature student who impressed me with her knowledge and experience which clearly helped her with the required research and presentation of her rationale.”

“Lenka has numerous qualifications that will position her well to succeed in this field of Graphic Design. On behalf of the AIP I felt proud to honour Lenka in this way. The AIP wishes Lenka well and the Sunshine Coast TAFE in Queensland can be very proud of her achievements.” Mr Pienaar said.
Lenka covered all key points required from her brief and undertook extensive research. The rationale was beautifully presented with excellent use of subheadings, and the inclusion of dot points made it easy to read. Her documentation was strongly supported with beautiful photography, and she successfully carried across the same design elements between her rationale and the packages. An excellent example of what the Judges called ‘the best rationale.’
