Consumer sentiment towards plastics and foam: Pulp and dualpak as alternatives to replace CPET and polystyrene
This presentation will discuss Consumer sentiment towards plastic and foam and how some companies are moving to Dualpak and Pulp board trays as a sustainable alternative. These innovative paper products are compostable and can be recycled, touching on sustainable forestry as a raw material resource alternative to resins. James will discuss foam and how it has being banished worldwide very slowly, with NZ Foodstuffs only just starting to ban the foam meat tray in the supermarkets and move back to a rigid tray. He will touch on products Confoil manufacture and import and talk about the advantages of foil, a totally recyclable resource with no loss of mechanical properties when recycled compared to plastic alternative. Features and benefits of aluminium will also be discussed and how it is used in the market sector for its barrier properties, retort packaging properties, used in laminates and how we can custom register print on it as an alternative to CPET.

Understanding Environmental implications of film and paper labels and Save Food Waste initiatives
Food labelling is the most diverse of all label end-uses, providing eye-catching branding whilst displaying critical consumer information - and the selection of the right label is key to the fine balance in ensuring the package can be disposed of responsibility at the end of life. Carol will discuss the environmental implications of the film and paper labels, adhesives and liners manufactured by UPM Raflatac, including the LCA analysis, Label Life that is based on comprehensive lifecycle assessment methodology and conducted in accordance with internationally recognized ISO 14040/44 standards. LCA studies indicate that the environmental impacts of a label’s lifecycle are distributed over a variety of processes, but significantly centred around the raw material selection. Carol will highlight how to match the right paper or film label with the package to achieve the most sustainable outcome. Stepping back from the package label to the actual package itself - protecting the contents of the package is a paramount consideration in sustainability. With this in mind the AIP Save Food Packaging Awards are part of the global initiative to fight food waste and the recipients of the inaugural awards have demonstrated a number of packaging initiatives that will be highlighted.

Fresh Sustainability Initiatives for Designers and Marketers
Sustainable product and packaging design is now a fundamental business requirement. It is driven by: consumer pressures; voluntary business commitments; and global initiatives such as the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals that include targets for the circular economy and food waste reduction. To respond with confidence and vigour, businesses have access to new initiatives that provide evidence backed guidance plus public recognition ensuring the marketing department remains as engaged on the sustainability journey as the design department. Anthony’s presentation will cover two complementary business tools to guide sustainable design: EcodEX, a streamlined life cycle assessment tool developed by Selerant and Nestlé; and PREP, developed by GreenChip, Planet Ark and Packaging Council of New Zealand to classify the recyclability of packaging sold in Australia and New Zealand. Anthony will then discuss the public disclosure of environmental attributes including using Planet Ark’s new on-pack recycling label, which removes consumer confusion. Designers and marketers: Working more closely together to develop to meet commitments to sustainable design.
